Redwoods, Seals and Bikinis

Next up was a 12 hour drive from Newport to San Francisco. We took Route 101 which took us along the coast 90% of the way. The scenery was breathtaking!!

The coast of Oregon was rugged and untouched. Absolutely beautiful! Knowing we had a long drive ahead we took our time and enjoyed each moment. We were even lucky enough to see seals bathing on rocks and frolicking in the ocean. They stank so bad I started to dry heave and we were about 50 ft away on top of a cliff!

This beautiful drive/scenery lasted for about 6 hours. Seriously! For the South Africans - imagine Nelspruit at the ocean with cliffs. After loads of sea air we approached the Avenue of the Giants. Its a 30 mile drive through a forest of Redwoods. You would think 30 miles of redwoods would get tiresome but you just cant believe the sheer size of these things. They have stops along the way for great photo opportunities and loads of walks and hikes through the forest.

Coming out of the Avenue of the Giants we spotted some people enjoying the sunshine at a river. You needed a 4x4 vehicle to reach this spot and Im so glad we had one! This was a secluded spot with crystal clear water with a green tinge from all the vegetation surrounding it / lime in the water - Im not sure.

James got to check out some eye candy and I took a photo just for Cam! I had to! I just wish I had a zoom lens. It was so cliche to see two Californian girls in bikinis soaking up the sunshine. To add to it, they had a red jeep with Californian plates. I felt like I was on a movie set. There was a dad just past them who wasn't subtle about his interest at all! He was trying to barbeque/braai and watch his children behave in the river and keep an eye on the eye candy. He wasn't doing well at multi tasking.

Back on the road…

While researching this trip and the Avenue of the Giants, James found a tree that we could drive through. It is the drive-through redwood tree at Myers Flat. We were a little apprehensive at the size of the gap vs the Chevy Tahoe (Titanic) we were in.

See what happened next!

We made it!

It looks like the car scrapes through and gets stuck but James made it!

Luckily we had a guy see us approaching the tree and he gave us a little advice on how to manoeuvre our way through.

After seeing pretty much every redwood Oregon and California had to offer we made our way to San Francisco.
