So our flight was scheduled to depart from Heathrow at 6.30am. Staff get to work at Heathrow at 5am and passengers need to arrive at the airport 2 hours before their flight departs. James and I were right on time. We stood in the queues patiently and excited, got to the desk and after about the 18th question the lovely lady at the check-in desk asked expectantly, if I had a visa. Travelling with a British passport and a slight British arrogance I never thought I would ever need a visa to travel.
My heart sank and my stomach knotted instantly. We could easily apply for the visa required to enter the States downstairs and it would get approved within 5 minutes With an hour and 15 minutes until the flight takes off we dashed downstairs and got the visa. Unfortunately KLM's systems were messing around that day and my visa approval did not reflect on their system in time for our flight. Long story short, we missed our flight.
My mind went into so many 'what if' scenarios I didn't know what to do with myself. Luckily I married a man with the patience of a god and after an hour of patiently waiting with a KLM employee searching for an alternative for us James got us another flight.
We eventually left at 10am after being at the airport ready to go since 4.30am.
OMG! We were on stand by for each flight, meaning we are not allocated seats until everyone else has boarded the flight. Nail-biting!!
Relieved, we were on our way to JFK. We enjoyed our first 'American' meal and about 40 mins before our flight to Seattle was to take off we found out we were in the wrong TERMINAL! We had to get a bus to the correct terminal. Again, we had to thank our lucky stars, we sprinted to our flight to Seattle, jumping over children running in the way, hearing mothers gasp in shock and made it onto our flight! OMG!! AGAIN!
Absolutely exhausted after travelling for 21 hours the silliness kicked in and I announced I was finally and officially "Sleepless in Seattle".
Oi! British arrogance? Us British citizens know you don't need a Visa, it is you British overseas citizens that have to have one!
ReplyDeleteHahaha in your defense they only changed that rule about 1-2 years ago. AND I can just imagine your panic!
